Authorities Seize Several Illegal Guns During Raid of Apartment in Newark, NJ
Law enforcement authorities recently raided an apartment in Newark, NJ and reportedly seized several loaded rifles and assault weapons. The raid was executed by the Newark Police Department on Saturday morning. According to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, police officers got access to an apartment located on the 100 block of First Street in Newark and executed a search warrant at the residence. The warrant was issued after an investigation by Newark detectives turned up evidence of possible illegal weapons being stashed at the apartment.
When authorities search the Newark home, they allegedly discovered a cache of weapons: a loaded AK-47 7.62, an AR-15, a ranch rifle, a sporting rifle, a semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun, a revolver, and two more handguns. Police also reportedly found and seized ammunition that included a 50-round capacity gun magazine. The weapons, as well as the ammunition, were confiscated by police and will be held by law enforcement pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
Illegal Gun Possession in Newark Homes
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose issued a statement about the gun confiscations and noted that Newark law enforcement has seized hundreds of guns in 2018. In fact, said Ambrose, police have seized 60 more guns that they had at this same time in 2017. Additionally, Newark authorities have been cracking down on gun violence on city streets, resulting in 35 fewer shooting victims in the city when compared to last year.
As for the recent weapons seizures at the First Street apartment, there have not yet been any arrests announced in the case. However, since the gun crime investigation remains active and ongoing, it is very possible that arrests and criminal charges will soon be announced. That could include charges for unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and a certain persons offense for being a convicted felon illegally in possession of a firearm. The penalties for a conviction on any of these very serious charges could lead to mandatory prison time under the NJ Graves Act.
