Police Investigate Homicide of 30-Year-Old Newark Resident
Law enforcement is investigating a fatal shooting on a street in Newark’s South Ward. The shooting incident happened at around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday in the area of the 100 block of Leslie Street in Newark, New Jersey. According to authorities, the victim, a 30-year-old Newark resident, was walking on the sidewalk when someone used a handgun to shoot him. The victim, Eric Lasure, was rushed to nearby University Hospital. Although doctors tried to save Lasure’s life, they were unable to do so: he was pronounced dead a short time after 10:00 p.m., a mere two hours after having been shot in the South Ward.
The Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide and Major Crimes Task Force are actively investigating the homicide and attempting to determine exactly what happened. Detectives from both law enforcement agencies canvassed the area near the site of the shooting, but their findings have not yet been released to the public. Additionally, police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the homicide.
This was the ninth homicide in Newark, NJ so far in 2018. At the same time in 2017, there had only been six homicides in Newark. However, while violent crimes are occurring at a higher rate in Newark when compared to last year, the city’s overall crime rate thus far is down approximately 11 percent.

If detectives are able to determine the identity of the culprit in the recent South Ward killing, that person could face severe penalties that include life imprisonment.
