Newark authorities are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred late at night on the McCarter Highway.
The accident involved a pedestrian who was attempting to walk across the highway a short time before 1:00 a.m. A motorist reportedly failed to slow down and struck the pedestrian.
After crashing into the victim, the motorist reportedly continued driving and fled the scene of the accident.
The victim, a 43-year-old Newark NJ resident, was rushed to University Hospital so that he could receive urgent medical attention. Tragically, doctors at the medical facility were unable to save the victim; he was pronounced dead less than an hour after the accident.
According to officials, the victim was returning home from a concert at the Newark Waterfront Center when he got hit by the motor vehicle.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the fatal crash. If detectives can eventually identify and arrest the motorist, that individual would probably face criminal charges for vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. The suspect would also likely be cited for numerous traffic offenses.
