Police in Newark NJ are investigating the violent assault of a local woman.
The assault incident occurred around 5:40 a.m. outside the Branch Brook Park Newark City Subway, which is located on Heller Parkway in Newark, New Jersey. According to law enforcement officials, the victim was walking in the area when a man jumped her and assaulted her.
A dog walker happened to pass by and came across the victim lying on the ground. The bystander dialed 911 and alerted local police, which dispatched police officers and paramedics to the scene.
The victim was transported to University Hospital in Newark NJ, where doctors treated her for her injuries and then sedated her. Officials later indicated that the victim’s injuries were severe.
Detectives with the Newark Police Department, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Essex County Sheriff’s Office are actively investigating the assault. At this time, police have not yet been able to identify the attacker.
If and when investigators determine the identity of the culprit, he would probably face very serious criminal charges for aggravated assault. In fact, depending on the extent of the victim’s injuries, the suspect could potentially be subject to penalties that include many years behind bars in NJ State Prison.
