Police recently arrested two men in connection with the violent assault of multiple Newark NJ police officers during a street brawl.
A 21-year-old West New York man and a Union City NJ man reportedly became involved in a violent altercation around 3:00 a.m. on a Newark NJ street. More than 50 people were reportedly watching the two suspects fighting, with some members of the crowd reportedly getting unruly themselves.
The two police officers attempted to intervene and stop the brawl. That’s when the West New York suspect allegedly used a knife to stab one of the officers in the arm. The officer sustained “severe” injuries in the attack, according to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose. The injured cop required medical treatment at the scene of the stabbing and then needed additional treatment at a local medical facility.
Another Newark NJ police officer sustained injuries as a result of the fight. That officer, a female detective, was punched and kicked in the face when she attempted to break up the street fight.
The police officer who got stabbed during the assault incident is a 35-year-old sergeant with the New York Police Department. The other injured officer is a Newark NJ detective.
The West New York suspect accused of stabbing a Newark cop has been charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated assault on a police officer and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The Union City suspect has also been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
