Newark New Jersey police arrested two people accused of possessing a loaded handgun on a city street.
Newark Police Special Enforcement Bureau detectives were conducting surveillance in the area of Avon Avenue and Peshine Avenue when they reportedly saw the two suspects engaged in a drug deal.
Police officers moved in and detained the suspects. A subsequent search of the suspects reportedly turned up a small quantity of marijuana, as well as a Tec-9 semi-automatic pistol. Additionally, the firearm allegedly had an ammunition magazine loaded with 33 bullets.
The suspects, an 18-year-old Newark male and a 24-year-old Newark male, were subsequently placed under arrest. They have been charged with multiple weapons offenses, including unlawful possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon with a large-capacity ammunition magazine.
The older suspect has also been charged with several other crimes, including a certain persons offense for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon while committing a drug offense, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of marijuana near school property.
