Newark NJ police arrested a man who allegedly had weapons and drugs inside a parked car.
According to authorities, members of the Newark Violence Reduction Initiative were on patrol in the city when they spotted a car that was illegally parked in a handicapped spot. Police saw the car parked in a handicapped spot near West Bigelow Street and Chadwick Avenue in Newark, New Jersey.
The police officers were in unmarked patrol cars when they approached the suspect’s vehicle. The officers saw someone talking to the suspect, who was inside the car.
As the officers got closer to the vehicle, they reportedly observed the suspect handling something inside the car. Police also reportedly smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
Police instructed the suspect to show his hands and get out of the car.
When Newark police officers later searched the vehicle, they allegedly discovered a loaded .380-caliber Smith & Wesson automatic handgun and several bags of marijuana. Police also allegedly found an open container of alcohol.
The suspect was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with a number of crimes, including unlawful possession of a weapon and simple possession of marijuana. Additionally, the suspect was cited for several traffic violations.
