Two men have been charged with murder for the fatal shooting of a person in Newark, New Jersey.
The homicide occurred during the morning on July 22. The 37-year-old victim was killed while walking to a car parked outside his home on the 200 block of South 9th Street in Newark, NJ. The victim was about to take his three young kids to daycare.
According to law enforcement, the suspects waited for the victim to exit his home and then shot him multiple times.
It is believed that the victim’s three children witnessed the murder. One of the suspects reportedly ordered the kids to go back inside the residence before the shooting. When the children remained outside, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the victim.
Newark police officers and first-responders were dispatched to the scene not long after the shooting. They found the victim unresponsive and lying on the street. The victim was rushed to nearby University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The two suspects, who are from Newark and Jersey City, were eventually linked to the killing after an investigation by the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Task Force.
Both suspects have been charged with first degree murder, in addition to robbery and weapons offenses.
If the suspects are ultimately convicted on the murder charges, they could end up spending the rest of their lives behind bars. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is classified as a first degree felony and carries a potential life sentence in NJ State Prison.
One of the suspects is currently at large and still wanted by police. The other suspect was placed under arrest and taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.
