Newark NJ police recently arrested an Irvington man who was allegedly in possession of an illegal handgun.
According to Newark officials, the 43-year-old suspect was driving a gold 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Elizabeth Avenue, just outside Weequahic Park in Newark, New Jersey. A couple of Essex County Sheriff’s officers reportedly saw the suspect speeding in his vehicle, so they initiated a traffic stop.
After pulling over the suspect, the police officers walked toward the vehicle and asked the suspect to show them his driver’s license. At that point, the suspect allegedly provided the officers with a fake ID.
Additionally, the Newark NJ police officers reportedly spotted a handgun in the vehicle glove box when the suspect went to retrieve his proof of insurance and registration. As the suspect opened the glove box, a loaded .45-caliber Glock handgun allegedly fell to the floor of the car.
The suspect, who is from Irvington NJ, was placed under arrest. He has been charged with a number of weapons offenses, including unlawful possession of a weapon and a certain persons offense for being a felon illegally in possession of a gun.
The suspect was also charged with providing false information to police and possession of a fraudulent driver’s license.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspect was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, NJ. He was being held at the jail in lieu of a $75,000 bond amount.
