Police in Newark New Jersey are searching for a suspect who allegedly shot and killed a local man on a city street.
The Newark Police Department received a call about gunshots being fired on the 100 block of Spruce Street in Newark, NJ around 2:30 p.m. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the 48-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was rushed to nearby University Hospital, where doctors tried to save him. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the medical facility.
Two other people sustained injuries as a result of the shooting. A 31-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were also taken to University Hospital after the shooting. They received medical treatment for injuries that are reportedly not life threatening.
All three victims were standing outside an apartment complex when the shooting occurred.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, law enforcement is actively investigating the homicide. At this time, police have not yet identified a suspect in the case.
If investigators do eventually identify and apprehend a suspect, it is likely that criminal charges for murder would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime in the NJ Criminal Code and carries a potential life sentence.
