Police in Newark New Jersey are searching for a suspect accused of fatally shooting a local man.
The murder occurred around 9:00 p.m. Law enforcement discovered the victim after receiving a report of gunshots fired near the 200 block of Jeliff Avenue in Newark, New Jersey.
The victim is a 21-year-old male who lived in Newark, NJ.
According to a statement released by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the victim was rushed to nearby University Hospital with serious gunshot wounds. Tragically, doctors were unable to save the victim; he was pronounced dead roughly two hours after the shooting.
The Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are conducting a joint investigation into the fatal shooting.
At this time, Newark investigators have yet to identify a suspect in the case. Authorities also do not yet know if there was a motive for the killing.
If police are eventually able to identify and apprehend the suspect, the offender would be subject to severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime in the NJ Criminal Code. A conviction for first degree murder could lead to life imprisonment in state prison, with a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years.
The recent shooting is the 69th homicide to occur in Newark so far this year.
