Newark New Jersey police are investigating a stabbing that left a person in critical condition.
According to law enforcement, the stabbing occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m. at an apartment located on Osborne Terrace in Newark, NJ. The suspect reportedly lives in the apartment with his two children and their mother.
The 31-year-old victim was coming to the apartment in order to get his car keys, which he had left in the residence. According to officials, the victim needed the keys because he was attempting to get the other residents away from the suspect. It is believed by authorities that the incident may be domestic violence related.
When the victim entered the apartment, the suspect allegedly held a knife and stabbed the victim several times. The victim managed to get away by using a shovel to fend off the suspect.
Afterwards, the victim dialed 911, prompting Newark police to send officers to the scene. Newark NJ police officers later found the suspect inside the residence and placed him under arrest.
Meanwhile, the victim was taken to nearby University Hospital, where doctors treated him for his stab wound injuries. He was later listed in critical condition.
The 34-year-old suspect, who is from Newark NJ, has been charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
