Newark New Jersey police are trying to find a suspect in a double homicide at a city apartment.
According to law enforcement, a man and a woman were shot to death at a residence located on Clinton Police in Newark, NJ.
Newark police were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of gunshots being fired in the area. When police officers got to the residence, they found the two victims.
Emergency medical responders pronounced the victims dead at the scene.
The Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force are working together on an investigation into the killings.
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose issued a statement on the killings, calling them “senseless” and blaming the homicides on “the availability of too many guns.”
The two shooting deaths were the culmination of four homicides in a 24-hour span in Newark, New Jersey. So far this year, there have already been 10 homicides in Newark, NJ.
If a suspect is identified and apprehended in the recent double homicide, it is likely that serious criminal charges for first degree murder would follow. A conviction on first degree murder charges could result in a punishment of life imprisonment in NJ State Prison, with a minimum mandatory sentence of 30 years behind bars.
