A Newark NJ man who allegedly robbed a jewelry store in the Ironbound section of the city was recently arrested in Virginia.
The suspect allegedly committed the robbery on December 1 at Vinhas Jewelers Inc., which is located on Ferry Street in Newark, New Jersey. According to law enforcement, the suspect entered the store and asked a worker to show him gold chains. The suspect then reportedly pointed a handgun at the clerk, grabbed the gold chains, and ran out of the building.
The jewelry store owner followed the suspect, which allegedly prompted the suspect to fire a gunshot in the owner’s direction. Fortunately, no one sustained any injuries as a result of the shooting.
While attempting to make his getaway, the suspect allegedly carjacked a Nissan Altima and fled the scene.
Detectives with the Newark Major Crimes Bureau conducted an investigation into the robbery and obtained video surveillance images that show the culprit committing the theft. The images reportedly showed that the suspect has a tattoo on his right arm.
Authorities received a number of tips that eventually led to the apprehension of the suspect in Virginia. Members of the U.S. Marshals Service tracked down the suspect and placed him under arrest.
The suspect, a 29-year-old resident of Newark, NJ, has been charged with numerous crimes, including armed robbery, carjacking, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
