A Newark New Jersey man faces criminal charges for allegedly running an illegal bar out of the basement of his house.
The suspect is a 62-year-old male who lives at 60 Norwood Street in the West Ward of Newark, NJ.
Police began an investigation into the suspect after someone was murdered at the basement bar.
Members of the Newark Police Department Special Investigation Bureau went to the suspect’s home and conducted a search as part of their probe into the homicide. The search led to the discovery that the suspect was allegedly running an illegal bar after hours. The evidence reportedly found by police included more than 100 bottles of alcohol.
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose issued a statement about the arrest and said that the suspect was “causing havoc to the Norwood Street community.” It is expected that Newark law enforcement will be seizing the suspect’s property because it was being used in the commission of a crime.
In addition to having his property seized, the suspect has been charged with maintaining an unlicensed liquor establishment and illegal sale of alcohol.
As far as the recent homicide at the underground bar, Newark NJ detectives are still investigating. The victim, a 40-year-old Newark resident, was shot and killed around 8:40 a.m. This marked the fifth homicide in Newark NJ so far in 2017.
