Police recently arrested an Irvington New Jersey man accused of assaulting a pastor in Newark, NJ.
The attacked occurred a short time after 7:30 p.m. in the area of Broad Street and Court Street. The pastor was walking along Broad Street in Newark when the suspect allegedly approached him and began to verbally assault him. According to authorities, the suspect yelled at the pastor and questioned his religion. Then the suspect allegedly hit the victim.
Newark NJ cops were called to the scene, where they investigated and then placed the suspect under arrest.
The suspect is a 32-year-old resident of Irvington NJ. He faces criminal charges for simple assault, with additional charges pending. It is possible that he will be charged with aggravated assault at a later date.
After being arrested and processed, the suspect was taken to East Orange General Hospital so that doctors could perform a psychological evaluation on him.
Meanwhile, the pastor was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark and treated for his injuries.
This was the second time in less than a week that a member of the clergy was violently assaulted in Newark, New Jersey. A 38-year-old Newark man allegedly attacked a bishop as he stood at the altar in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
