Police are investigating the fatal stabbing death of a man in Newark, New Jersey.
The incident occurred during the early morning hours at a Newark apartment. The Newark Police Department received a report of a stabbing around 1:00 am at an apartment complex located on Somme Street in Newark, NJ.
When police officers got to the scene, they found the 64-year-old victim unresponsive and suffering from a deep stab wound. The victim was pronounced dead just after 1:30 a.m.
Medical examiners were expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Task Force is actively investigating the possible homicide. At this time, investigators have not released any additional information about the incident.
If law enforcement is eventually able to identify and apprehend a suspect in the case, it is likely that criminal charges for homicide would follow.
Moreover, the suspect would be subject to severe penalties if convicted. Murder is considered the most serious offense in the NJ Criminal Code. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is a first degree felony. Although first degree crimes are usually punishable by up to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison, a murder conviction may result in life imprisonment.
