Newark NJ police are investigating the fatal shooting of a local man at a city apartment building.
According to law enforcement, the 35-year-old victim was shot and killed in the hallway of an apartment building on the 200 block of Washington Street in Newark, New Jersey.
The Newark Police Department received a call about gunshots being fired in the area a short time after 8:30 p.m.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying in the hallway of the apartment complex. The victim was unresponsive; he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Task Force are actively investigating the homicide. At this time, law enforcement has not released any additional details about the shooting.
If police are eventually able to identify and apprehend a suspect, significant criminal charges for murder would likely follow. Murder carries the most severe penalties in the New Jersey Criminal Code. That’s because N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3 classifies murder as a first degree felony. Although first degree crimes are ordinarily punishable by up to 20 years in NJ State Prison, criminal homicide can lead to life imprisonment.
Authorities have asked for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in the shooting. Anyone who has information about the murder should contact Essex County task force detectives at 877-847-7432 or 973-621-4586.
