Newark NJ police are trying to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting of a man from East Orange, New Jersey.
According to police, the 30-year-old victim was walking on the 200 block of North 9th Street in Newark’s West Ward just before midnight when gunshots were fired.
Police and emergency responders quickly arrived in the area. However, they were unable to do anything to save the victim; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was later identified as an East Orange man.
In addition to the East Orange victim, an unidentified female was also injured in the shooting. She was transported to University Hospital in Newark NJ, where she has been listed in critical condition.
The killing is the ninth homicide in Newark so far this year.
The Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide / Major Crimes Task Force are actively investigating the shooting. At this time, authorities have not made any arrests in the case. Additionally, investigators have yet to identify a potential motive for the killing.
If authorities are able to identify a suspect in the shooting, serious criminal charges could follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is punishable by life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison. Moreover, a conviction on first degree murder charges could result in a minimum sentence of 30 years in state prison.
