Newark NJ police are investigating the fatal shooting of a local man in the city’s South Ward.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the victim was found on the 200 block of Osborne Terrace in Newark, New Jersey. He was reportedly suffering from a gunshot wound.
Paramedics rushed the victim to nearby University Hospital so that he could receive necessary medical treatment for his injuries. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save the victim; he was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital.
The shooting death is the fifth homicide in Newark so far this year.
Although police are early in the investigation, they have already identified the victim as a 25-year-old Newark resident.
The investigation is active and ongoing. However, police have yet to make any arrests. Moreover, no suspects have been identified at this time.
If a suspect is eventually identified and apprehended, they could face significant penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, the purposeful killing of another individual is a first degree criminal offense. A conviction on first degree murder charges can potentially result in life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison. Even the minimum sentence is stiff: 30 years in state prison.
