Newark New Jersey police arrested two men who allegedly fired gunshots on West Bigelow Street in the former 5th Precinct.
Police officers with the Newark motorcycle squad were on patrol when they heard gunshots ring out. The officers ran to the scene and spoke with witnesses. According to the witnesses, three men fired gunshots at them and then ran down the street.
Police apprehended two of the suspects a few minutes later. The third suspect ran off and managed to get away.
Newark police allegedly found a handgun lying on the ground near the site of the shooting.
The suspects, who live in Newark and Irvington, were charged with several weapons offenses, including unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Additionally, the suspects were charged with aggravated assault for allegedly firing their weapons, as well as drug crimes because police allegedly found the suspects in possession of 84 glassine envelopes of illegal drugs.
The Newark police director praised the arresting officers for acting quickly to capture the suspects.
Newark police are actively investigating the shooting. According to authorities, the victims were able to identify both of the arrested suspects as the shooters.
