Police in Nutley NJ are searching for a woman who allegedly used counterfeit bills to purchase $900 worth of gift cards from a local store.
According to authorities, a 51-year old Newark NJ woman bought the gift cards from a store on Franklin Avenue in Nutley, New Jersey.
The suspect reportedly purchased a total of nine gift cards valued at $900. She allegedly used nine different $100 bills to make the purchase.
Store employees became suspicious when the woman quickly left the store after completing the transaction. The employees then inspected the bills and realized that the woman had used fake currency.
Nutley NJ police were called to the scene. Investigators were able to obtain a surveillance photo which reportedly showed the suspect around the time of the incident. Police also obtained a piece of paper on which the suspect had scribbled some notes inside the store. As a result, investigators were eventually able to determine the identity of the suspect.
The suspect has not yet been apprehended; she remains at large.
The investigation remains open and police are actively looking for the suspect. In the meantime, the woman has been charged with theft by deception. She has also been named as a “wanted person.”
