Police in Newark NJ recently arrested several people, in separate incidents, for illegally carrying guns on city streets.
The first arrest was made on New Year’s Day. When a car accident occurred near UMDNJ/Rutgers Hospital, police shut down the street. However, a 21-year-old Irvington man ignored officers and allegedly “barreled through the scene.” A police officer pointed his gun at the car and instructed the driver to come to a complete stop.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police reportedly discovered drugs. Additionally, police allegedly found a handgun on the vehicle’s passenger, a 22-year-old man from Newark. As a result, both suspects were placed under arrest.
Later the same day, undercover police officers allegedly saw a man and a woman conducting a drug deal near the intersection of Johnson Avenue and Clinton Avenue. When the officers approached the suspects, the man reportedly fled the scene and ran into a nearby apartment. Police went to the apartment and allegedly saw a woman attempting to hide a machine gun. Additionally, police allegedly discovered drugs inside the apartment.
The two suspects were placed under arrest; they have been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and drug offenses.
Newark police made another arrest after being advised of a man in possession of a gun in the area of Broad Street and Market Street. Patrol officers got a description of the suspect and eventually spotted him. According to police, the suspect was found in possession of a handgun, as well as drugs.
Newark NJ police arrested another man after responding to a motor vehicle stop near 7th Avenue and Summer Avenue. While the officers were approaching the vehicle, they reportedly saw a man walk past them on the street and clutch his waistband. Officers spoke with the man and reportedly learned that he had a gun in his waistband. The suspect was placed under arrest and charged with a number of weapons offenses.
In the span of a week, Newark officers reportedly seized three handguns, a machine gun, and “a cache of drugs.”
The Newark Police Department is actively investigating all of the incidents. Anyone with information about the incidents or the suspects has been asked to contact police at 877-695-8477.
