Newark NJ police are investigating the murder of a man in the city’s South Ward.
According to authorities, the 33-year-old victim was shot and killed near the intersection of Clinton Place and Randolph Street. The site of the shooting is in the area of University High School of the Humanities.
The victim was unresponsive when police found him lying in the intersection.
After the shooting, the victim was rushed to nearby University Hospital. Tragically, doctors were not able to save him; he was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and the Newark Police Department are actively investigating the killing. Shortly after the shooting, law enforcement could be seen collecting evidence in the area.
At this time, investigators have not identified any suspects in the shooting.
If police are eventually able to identify and apprehend a suspect, it is likely that significant criminal charges for homicide would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is classified as a first degree felony. Although most first degree crimes carry a potential sentence of 10-20 years in NJ State Prison, a murder conviction could result in life imprisonment.
