Newark NJ police are investigating a recent shooting death at a local gas station.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the shooting incident went down around 4:20 p.m. at Power Gas Station, which is located on the 400 block of West Market Street in Newark, New Jersey.
The Newark Police Department received a report of gunshots being fired at the gas station and immediately dispatched police officers to the area. When police arrived at the scene, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was rushed to nearby University Hospital, where doctors tried to save him. Tragically, the victim was pronounced dead less than 30 minutes after being shot.
The shooting victim was later identified as a 47-year-old man who lived in Iselin, NJ.
The Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Task Force are actively investigating the homicide. At this time, law enforcement has yet to identify a suspect or a motive for the shooting.
If investigators are eventually able to determine the identity of the shooter, it is likely that the culprit would face criminal charges for first degree murder, as well as charges for multiple weapons offenses. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime listed in the New Jersey Criminal Code and carries a potential punishment of life imprisonment in NJ State Prison.
