Newark NJ police are investigating the fatal shooting of an East Orange man on a city street.
The tragic shooting incident went down around 4:15 a.m. on Friday. According to Essex County officials, the victim was in a car and driving on North 5th Street in East Orange NJ when someone used a gun to shoot him multiple times.
When Newark law enforcement got a report of gunshots being fired in the area, police officers were dispatched to the scene. Newark NJ cops found the suspect inside his motor vehicle and suffering from several gunshot wounds.
The victim, a 37-year-old male from East Orange, NJ, was rushed to University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. Doctors at the Newark medical facility did everything they could to save the victim, but he was pronounced dead approximately 30 minutes after police found him.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the homicide. Among the agencies trying to find the shooting suspect are the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force.
At this time, investigators have not been able to identify a suspect in the shooting. If police can eventually determine the identity of the shooter, it is likely that the culprit would face criminal charges for first degree murder.
As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime listed in the New Jersey Criminal Code. While most first degree felonies carry a maximum term of incarceration of 20 years in NJ State Prison, a murder conviction can result in a sentence of life imprisonment, with a minimum term of imprisonment of 30 years.
