Newark NJ police are investigating the city’s first homicide of 2016.
According to authorities, a 36-year-old Irvington NJ man was killed during a domestic altercation at an apartment located on Spruce Street in Newark, New Jersey.
The Newark Police Department received a call about a domestic dispute a short time after 2:00 a.m. When Newark police officers arrived at the Central Ward apartment, they found the victim unconscious.
Not long after police got to the residence, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Although officials have not specified the exact cause of the victim’s death or the nature of his injuries, they did indicate that he was likely killed as a result of an altercation at the residence. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the precise cause of the victim’s death.
At this time, no arrests have been made in the case.
If Newark investigators can eventually determine who killed the victim, it is probable that serious criminal charges for murder would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is a first degree crime and carries a potential penalty of life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison.
