Port Authority police recently arrested a Newark NJ man who has been accused of a sex crime on public transit.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. According to law enforcement, the suspect inappropriately touched a 24-year-old Essex County woman on a PATH train in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The victim notified Port Authority police officers. Law enforcement obtained video surveillance footage and circulated a photo of the suspect.
Police officers later saw the suspect at the Journal Square PATH station in Jersey City, NJ. Police subsequently arrested the suspect.
The suspect is a 30-year-old man who lives on Seventh Street in Newark, New Jersey. He faces criminal charges for criminal sexual contact.
If the suspect is convicted on the sexual offense charges, he could be subject to severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:14-3, criminal sexual contact is typically classified as a fourth degree felony. A conviction for fourth degree criminal sexual contact could lead to a sentence of up to 18 months in New Jersey State Prison.
After being placed under arrest, the suspect was remanded to the Hudson County Jail in Harrison, NJ.
