Police in Newark New Jersey are investigating a non-fatal shooting on a city street.
The shooting went down during the early morning hours, shortly after 1:00 a.m. According to law enforcement, the violent incident occurred around the intersection of Broadway and Oriental Street in Newark, NJ. The victim was reportedly walking down the street when someone drove past him and used a handgun to fire multiple gunshots in his direction. At least one of the bullets struck the victim, causing him to fall to the ground.
The suspect drove off immediately after using the firearm.
Someone at the scene dialed 911 and alerted the Newark Police Department to the gunfire. Police officers were subsequently dispatched to the area, where they found the victim.
The victim is a 26-year-old man who resides in Newark, NJ. After police officers and emergency medical responders arrived at the scene of the shooting, the victim was transported to a nearby hospital so that he could be treated for his gunshot wounds. He was later listed in stable condition.
Newark NJ detectives are actively investigating the shooting incident. At this time, police have not yet been able to identify a suspect.
If investigators can eventually determine the identity of the shooter, it is likely that the culprit would face criminal charges for aggravated assault.
A conviction on aggravated assault charges could result in severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), aggravated assault with a deadly weapon such as a handgun or a knife is classified as a third degree felony and carries a potential penalty of 3-5 years in NJ State Prison.
