A Bloomfield NJ man accused of robbing and killing a young mother in Newark has pleaded not guilty.
According to prosecutors, the 27-year-old suspect and three other people tried to rob the victim in November 2014. The suspects reportedly attempted to steal her cell phone. When the robbery went bad, the suspects allegedly shot the victim.
The victim was headed to a friend’s residence on 3rd Street in Newark at the time of the incident.
The victim, who was 22 years old and lived in Newark, suffered serious injuries as a result of the shooting. Emergency medical responders rushed the victim to nearby University Hospital in Newark. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries and died the following day.
Authorities said that the victim left behind two young children.
The other three suspects had already been arrested. However, it was not until recently that law enforcement found the Bloomfield suspect. According to prosecutors, the suspect was located in Savannah, Georgia last month. Remarkably, police happened to find the suspect in the same apartment as another man who is wanted in connection with a different homicide in Newark NJ.
The suspect recently appeared in Essex County Superior Court and entered a not guilty plea. Afterwards, the superior court judge told the suspect that the case would go to a grand jury for possible indictment.
While awaiting a grand jury proceeding, the suspect is being housed at the Essex County Correctional Facility on a $1 million bail amount.
One of the other suspects in the homicide is from Newark, while two of the other suspects are from Irvington NJ.
