Reckless Driving Statute: N.J.S.A. 39:4-96

Reckless driving violations are addressed by N.J.S.A. 39:4-96. According to the statute, a driver may be classified as “reckless” if they operate a motor vehicle in disregard of the rights or safety of other people. The penalties for a reckless driving conviction can be severe. First Offense:

Jail: Up to 60 days
Fine: $50–$200
Points on License: 5 points

Second Offense:

Points on License: 5 points
