Newark NJ police arrested a woman accused of driving while drunk and falling asleep while her two young children were in the backseat.
According to authorities, the 30-year-old Whitehall NJ woman was intoxicated when she drove her two kids in Newark, New Jersey.
Newark police received a report of a sick person at the intersection of West Bigelow Street and Hillside Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they allegedly found the suspect slumped behind the wheel of her car. According to the officers, the suspect was asleep.
The incident reportedly occurred sometime after midnight.
The responding officers checked on the suspect and saw two young children seated in the backseat of the car. Authorities said that the children were not in booster seats.
It is believed that the two minors are the suspect’s children. One of the kids is 6 years old; the age of the other kid was not released to the media.
The kids were safely removed from the vehicle and taken to nearby University Hospital.
After doctors examined the children and ruled out any injuries, the children were handed over to the New Jersey Department of Family and Youth Services. The department later awarded temporary custody of the kids to another member of the suspect’s family.
Meanwhile, the suspect was charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) and endangering the welfare of a child. The suspect was also cited for several traffic violations.
