Police arrested a 17-year-old driver who allegedly eluded police officers and then led them on a chase in Teaneck NJ.
The car chase reportedly began late at night when a sergeant with the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pull over the suspect, who was driving a 1998 black BMW near Memorial Drive and Broadway in Paterson, New Jersey. The officer decided to initiate the stop because he allegedly saw that the vehicle had a broken tail light and a fake license plate.
However, the suspect allegedly refused to pull over; instead, he reportedly sped up and tried to evade the officer. At one point during the pursuit, the suspect’s BMW allegedly came close to hitting a sheriff’s patrol car which had been called to the scene.
The chase continued from Fair Street to Broadway in Elmwood Park, NJ. Eventually, the pursuit ended up on Route 4 in Teaneck NJ.
The chase, which lasted a total of 20 minutes, ended when the BMW crashed into the median on Route 4 at the Webster Avenue exit.
Thankfully, no members of law enforcement or civilians were injured as a result of the chase.
Both the driver and the 20-year-old passenger are from Newark, New Jersey.
After being arrested, the suspects were taken to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson, NJ. The suspects received medical treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. After being treated, the suspects were turned over to police.
The driver has been charged with eluding police, resisting arrest, assault by auto, and several traffic violations. The driver has also been charged with drug possession because arresting officers allegedly found a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) in the vehicle.
Meanwhile, the vehicle passenger has been charged with resisting arrest. He was also wanted by police because he allegedly had outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest.
