Newark NJ police are investigating a shooting that left a local boy injured.
According to law enforcement, the shooting occurred at a cookout on the 800 block of South 17th Street in Newark, New Jersey. The boy suffered gunshot wounds in the head, while another man sustained a gunshot wound in the arm.
Both victims were rushed via private vehicles to nearby University Hospital.
Thankfully, the boy is now listed in stable condition. According to hospital officials, the boy was alert after receiving medical treatment for his injuries.
Investigators said that they do not believe the boy was the intended target of the shooting.
The Newark Police Department is actively investigating the shooting. At this time, Newark police have not made any arrests in the case.
If a suspect is eventually identified and apprehended, they could face severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), anyone who uses a deadly weapon to cause bodily injury can be charged with second degree aggravated assault. A conviction on second degree aggravated assault charges could result in a sentence of 5-10 years in New Jersey State Prison.
