Newark New Jersey police are investigating the possible murder of a local man on a city street.
According to law enforcement, the fatal shooting occurred shortly after 7:00 p.m. The Newark Police Department received a call about gunshots fired on the 200 block of South 11th Street in Newark, NJ. When police officers got to the scene, they found the 20-year-old victim lying on the sidewalk. The victim was unresponsive when police found him.
Emergency medical responders briefly treated the victim at the scene before taking him to nearby University Hospital. Approximately one hour after the shooting, the victim was pronounced dead.
The Newark Police Department is actively investigating the shooting death. At this time, investigators have not determined a motive for the killing. Additionally, police have yet to identify any suspects in the shooting.
If police can eventually determine who killed the victim, it is likely that serious criminal charges for murder would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is classified as a first degree crime and carries a potential punishment of life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison.
