A Newark New Jersey man was shot multiple times and killed at a local after-hours club.
The Newark Police Department received a report of gunshots at the club, which is located on Sherman Avenue in Newark, NJ. The shooting reportedly occurred around 5:30 a.m.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the 45-year-old victim suffering from several gunshot wounds.
The victim was rushed to nearby University Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors at the hospital were unable to save the victim; he was pronounced dead roughly an hour after the shooting.
Sometime later, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Police Department issued a joint statement on the shooting. The official statement indicated that the victim died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.
Newark police are actively investigating the fatal shooting. At this time, no suspects have been identified or arrested in the case.
If a suspect is eventually identified and captured, they would be subject to significant criminal penalties. That’s because murder is the most serious offense in the New Jersey Criminal Code. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, anyone who purposely caused the death of another person can be charged with first degree murder. A conviction on first degree murder charges could result in a sentence of life imprisonment.
