Police recently arrested a Newark NJ man accused of assaulting a Port Authority cop who was off duty at the time.
The violent incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on September 9 in the Ironbound area of Newark, New Jersey. According to law enforcement, an off-duty Port Authority police officer was walking along the 500 block of Market Street when the suspect approached him and tried to steal his gun. During an ensuing struggle, the firearm was fired.
While the suspect and the Port Authority cop were fighting, an off-duty EMS worker attempted to intervene. His reward for doing so was reportedly being beaten unconscious by the suspect.
The EMS worker, a 27-year-old man from Elizabeth NJ, later required medical treatment, as did the Port Authority cop.
Newark NJ detectives investigated the incident and found ballistic evidence at the scene. Investigators soon identified the suspect as the likely culprit.
Members of the Newark Police Fugitive Apprehension Team later located the suspect at a home located on Roseville Avenue in Newark. Police officers were able to arrest the suspect without incident.
The suspect is a 31-year-old man who resides in Newark, NJ. He has been charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
After being placed under arrest and charged, the suspect was remanded to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, NJ. He was being held at the jail in lieu of a $250K bail amount.
