A Newark NJ man allegedly assaulted a bishop during mass at a local church.
The incident reportedly occurred during Saturday mass at Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey. The mass was held during an event to honor Roberto Clemente, a famous baseball player who tragically died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve in 1972.
According to authorities, the suspect approached the reverend at the altar and punched him in the mouth. The victim sustained minor injuries as a result of the violent altercation and was later treated at an area hospital.
Newark NJ law enforcement investigated the incident and eventually placed the suspect under arrest. It is unclear at this time what might have provoked the attack.
The suspect is a 48-year-old resident of Newark, New Jersey. He faces criminal charges for aggravated assault.
