A Newark NJ man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly evading police during a violent encounter.
According to police, the 26-year-old suspect was seen trying to steal a vehicle, a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, from the Alamo rental car parking lot near Newark Liberty International Airport. The lot is located on Route 1 & 9.
When a New Jersey state trooper found the suspect a short time later, the suspect reportedly attempted to avoid apprehension. According to authorities, the vehicles collided during the chase.
The state trooper shot his service weapon and reportedly struck the suspect. However, the suspect was still able to get away in the stolen vehicle. Police said that the vehicle was later recovered in Newark, where the suspect had apparently abandoned it.
Police later found the suspect at a Harlem NY hospital, where he was reportedly being treated for a gunshot wound.
The suspect has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and various weapons offenses.
After being arrested, the suspect was held in a New York jail in lieu of $75,000 bail; he is expected to be extradited to New Jersey to answer for the charges.
