Police in Newark NJ arrested a man accused of committing a murder during an armed robbery at a local gas station.
The violent crime went down earlier this year, but Newark police only recently captured the homicide suspect. According to authorities, the suspect committed the murder at the Power Gas Station located on West Market Street in Newark, New Jersey.
The suspect allegedly used a handgun to try to rob the victim. When something went wrong, the suspect allegedly shot the victim and then fled the area.
After the shooting, someone dialed 911 and alerted the Newark Police Department. Police officers and emergency medical crews responded to the scene. The victim was briefly treated at the gas station by emergency medical responders before being rushed to nearby University Hospital. Tragically, doctors at the Newark hospital could not save the victim; he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical facility.
The victim was 47 years old at the time of his death. He reportedly lived in Iselin NJ and owned the Newark gas station.
It took several months, but the tireless investigators with the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office never gave up. Law enforcement eventually apprehended the suspect.
The suspect is a 49-year-old man from Newark, NJ. He faces numerous criminal charges, including first degree murder, armed robbery, and weapons offenses.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspect was remanded to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, New Jersey. He was being held at the jail on a $1 million bail amount.
