Newark NJ police are investigating a fatal shooting outside a local residence.
The homicide occurred during the early morning hours. According to Essex County prosecutors, the 47-year-old victim was shot and killed outside his home on Leslie Street in Newark, New Jersey.
The Newark Police Department received a report of gunshots being fired in the area. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim’s body.
The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Newark NJ police investigated the shooting and gathered evidence in the hours after the shooting.
Newark detectives spoke with neighbors of the victim. Witnesses reportedly told detectives that the victim was seated in a tan sedan in the driveway of his home when someone approached the vehicle.
The suspect allegedly fired several gunshots through the vehicle window. According to one person who lives on the same street as the victim, at least five gunshots were fired.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force is actively investigating the homicide. At this time, police have not yet identified a suspect or a motive for the killing.
If police do eventually identify and apprehend a suspect, it is likely that serious criminal charges for murder would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime in the NJ Criminal Code and carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment.
