Newark police arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of a local man.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the deadly shooting occurred at a home located in the 500 block of South Orange Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. The two suspects allegedly got into an altercation with the victim in the backyard of the home.
The Newark Police Department received a report of gunshots being fired and dispatched officers to the area. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying in the yard. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Newark police detained the two suspects at the scene. The suspects were later placed under arrest.
One of the suspects, a 19-year-old male from Irvington NJ, has been charged with murder. The other suspect, a 21-year-old male from Newark, has been charged with multiple weapons offenses.
If the suspect accused of murder is convicted on the charges, he faces severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime in the NJ Criminal Code. A conviction for first degree murder could result in life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison, with a minimum term of incarceration of 30 years.
After being placed under arrest, both suspects were taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, NJ. The suspect charged with homicide is being held at the jail in lieu of $750,000 bail; the other suspect is being held in lieu of a much lower $75,000 bail amount.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force is actively investigating the killing. At this time, no further details about the shooting were being made available to the public.
